Alexander Bordino Whips up a Storm at Student Plastic Design Awards with Soft Ice S Pump

The awards ceremony for the Student Plastics Design Award, kindly co-sponsored by The Worshipful Company of Horners and IOM3, took place on Friday 3rd July 2015 at Painters' Hall, London.

With a fantastic selection of entries to choose from, the panel of judges decided that their overall winner was Alexander Bordino with the Soft Ice S Pump, which is currently in the process of being patented. Alexander received a cash prize of £1000, a week’s visit to Bayer MaterialScience in Germany and a highly sought after internship at PriestmanGoode, a leading global design and brand experience agency specializing in aviation, transport and product design.

The inspiration for the innovative winning design came from Alexander's family, who are part of the food industry and have noted a number of issues with the current ice cream machines they use. Using a blend of polymers instead of the current stainless steel material, which includes precious metals, the pump effectively turns liquid ice cream into aerated whipped ice cream. Alexander reduced the number of components of the tool from 15 to 7; ensuring the design is 2kg lighter, much easier to clean and made from hygienic plastic.

The award was created to encourage students to recognise that plastics are a key design material of the 21st century and to maintain the continued growth of the UK Plastics Industry based on design innovation.

The Worshipful Company of Horners has two additional awards that are still open for entries. The first, the Horners Award for Plastics Innovation and Design, is believed to be the longest established design award for plastics in the world. The second, the Horners Bottlemakers Award, requires that entries be a plastic bottle, jar or hollow container made by any process. If you think your plastic product has what it takes to go all the way, submit your entry before the deadline of 24th July 2015.
