Below is an interview with one of Solutions 4 Polymers (S4P) apprentice who completed his apprenticeship in early 2019.

Rhys Kirby of RWC (Formerly John Guest) is in the third year of his Level 3 injection moulding apprenticeship.

How did you get into the plastics industry?

My Dad works at my current work place. As I was working a part time job, he told me to apply. After applying for 3 jobs, I got a job as a get general hand. I think got offered an apprenticeship.

What was your very first role and where are you now?

My first role was working as a general hand. Now I’m in my second year as an injection moulding apprentice setter.

What is your biggest achievement to date within your workplace?

Being nominated for employee of the quarter.

How do you feel the apprenticeship has helped you?

Before this job, I didn’t really have a ‘skilled’ background. So, now I’m working towards a qualification in engineering, it makes me feel proud knowing I’m able to do a job that I never thought I’d ever do. My background is mostly sport, so doing this apprenticeship has taught me that I can do something completely different to what I’m used to.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Hopefully working my way up the ladder, gaining more knowledge and bettering myself.

What has been the most useful thing you have learnt along the way?

Take your time with work. Think before you act. Always do one thing at a time. Also learnt that I can do something that I have no experience in if I work hard and do my best.

What advice would you give to anyone entering the industry now?

Get involved.
