Understanding Best Available Techniques (BAT): A Simplified Guide for the Plastics Sector

The Essential Guide to Best Available Techniques (BAT)

The British Plastics Federation has developed a complimentary guide designed to assist plastics companies in reducing their environmental footprint during their operations. According to the UK government's definition, 'Best Available Techniques' (BAT) refers to the most effective methods currently accessible for preventing or minimising emissions and environmental impacts. Companies are required to implement BAT if their operations qualify as an 'installation,' such as a facility engaged in industrial processes.

This free resource is available to BPF members, designed to encompass both the technology and the strategic planning involved in the design, construction, maintenance, operation, and decommissioning of a plastics company’s facilities. Serving as a high-level guide, it encourages BPF members to thoughtfully consider essential questions and potential challenges related to implementing BAT in their operations.

To provide a foundational understanding of the necessary actions, the guide addresses the key questions for implementing BAT, including:

  • Purchasing equipment
  • Energy efficiency
  • Boilers and furnaces
  • Avoidance, recovery and disposal of wastes
  • Reduce climate impact of raw materials
  • Site drainage

While this publication aims to support plastic processors in achieving their net zero goals, it is important to remember that net zero is just one component of the broader sustainability agenda. This member-only document is available for download now!

Please note that BAT is not a fixed objective or end point, but constantly changes as technology improves.
