Big funding and Materials KTN Support for a Small Company in Bio-Origin Antibacterial Agents

Following a discussion between a company and the Materials KTN (polymer sector), an application was submitted for £5,000 of funding to pay for formal research jointly by Bangor and Reading Universities.

The company was successful and the research results came back in just 3 months. The result was that a bio-based antibacterial coating (intended for food packaging film) was proved to work at far greater efficacy than previously understood. The Materials KTN then supported a further bid into a recent Technology Strategy Board (TSB) competition.

The company and its new partners succeeded in winning a £1.8 million project. Whilst it will take a few years for the substantial research and development to be completed, this shows how SME innovation can quickly, with the right support, make headway even in these current difficult economic times.
