BPF goes to Northern Ireland
Tuesday, 26 August 2014
He was delighted to be asked to present John Rainey, Chairman of the Denroy Group, with a crystal award, to mark his recently awarded MBE and his immense contribution to NIPA since its inception.
Law updated NIPA members on the package of measures supporting the ‘Circular Economy’ which recently emerged from the EU. Whilst saying that the plastics story, particularly recycling, supported the circularity concept he said there were dangers such as discouragement to Energy from Waste.
He said that the proposed Amendment to the Packaging Directive is problematic. The legal basis of the Directive moves from being a ‘free trade Directive’ to ‘environmental’, it includes guidelines for design which could be too prescriptive and it changes the method of calculation of the recycling achievement. It also introduces the concept of ‘Extended Producer Responsibility’ which may well introduce unwelcome costs for manufacturers.
