BPF Praises Building Industry for Increasing PVC Recycling
Friday, 1 May 2009
The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has praised the UK’s building industry for increasing PVC recycling levels despite low construction activity.
In a report by Vinyl 2010 just released the UK achieved second place out of 15 countries in a European table for recycling PVC post-consumer waste, mainly from the building and construction sectors.
The UK contributed more than 21% to the European total of nearly 200,000 tonnes (194,950t) by recycling nearly 43,000 tonnes (42,730t) of post-consumer PVC in 2008. In 2007 42,162 tonnes of post-consumer PVC from the UK was recycled.
Philip Law, Public and Industrial Affairs Director at the BPF, the body responsible for overseeing the recycling of PVC in the UK for Recovinyl, said: “The figures show that recycling remains an important part of the PVC industry even when times are as tough as these. We are on course to meet the 2010 targets for recycling and the substitution lead-based stabilisers.”
