BPF praises members' improvements on accident reduction

The BPF has announced today the results of its latest Accident Survey, which analysed 2012 data from BPF members. The survey, now in its sixteenth year, has become a highly valued benchmark for the safety performance of the plastics industry in the UK. A total of 122 BPF members participated, covering almost 24,000 employees.

The survey indicates a general downward trend in number of accidents, which is excellent news for the industry. The most common accidents were caused by cuts and accidents caused by hitting a stationary object. Following closely in the rankings were injures whilst handling, lifting or carrying and slips/trips/falls.

The report also demonstrates the importance of the BPF’s role, particularly through its SIMPL (Safety in Manufacturing Plastics) initiative, which plays a significant part in raising Health and Safety standards. Mike Jones, Chairman of the BPF’s Health and Safety Committee said: ‘We still have a long way to go. One accident is one too many and the cost to industry and the person injured are significant not only in financial terms. No one should expect to go to work and leave with an injury or harmed in some other way.’

Jones added ‘As the leading trade association representing the UK plastic industry, the BPF through its SIMPL strategy, is committed to supporting our industry in reducing the number of accidents that occur.’

The findings of the report were released at the BPF’s annual Health & Safety seminar which took place at the Polymer Training and Innovation Centre, in Telford. This year’s seminar has been a sold-out event, demonstrating the industry’s interest for improving health and safety standards across the UK.
