BPF Recyclers’ first meeting launches Buyers’ Guide

The BPF Recycling Group’s (BPFRG) inaugural meeting kick-started membership of the BPF and featured the launch of its Recyclers’ Buyers Guide which features the activities of some thirty-two plastics recyclers.

The Guide shows in detail the range of recycled materials which companies are selling together with the used materials they are buying. It contains the full contact details for all recycling firms who are members of the BPFRG. The Guide is also available to download at http://bit.ly/hSrQcY

The recent meeting, which was held at the Polymer Innovation and Training Centre in Telford, was also attended by Judicaelle Hammond, Head of Packaging Policy and Waste Hierarchy Implementation Programme at the Department for Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

Hammond had a candid exchange with members on the current Waste Policy Review which is expected to be published in May 2011 and gave an insight into Government thinking on its long-term approach to boosting recycling.

It emerged that the Review had excited enormous interest with some 1,500 people responding to an online questionnaire. Key themes indicated were the Government’s intention to create a ‘zero waste economy’ with waste regarded as valuable resources, the importance of partnerships in sustainable resource management and localism in decision making.

There is a considerable Ministerial interest in the reduction of waste in its wider sense through preventative use of excessive materials and increased recycling. There is highlighted with an emphasis on working with WRAP, on the Courtauld and Construction Commitments.

Roger Baynham, Chairman of the BPF Recycling Group said, “The discussion we were able to have with Judicaelle Hammond is a superb example of the kind of dialogue we are able to achieve with Government through our organised platform as a Recycling Industry. Our mission is to become the single, authoritative voice for the UK plastics recycling industry, promoting greater interaction between recyclers, converters using recyclate and dialogue with officials.

“We were able to advise Judicaelle Hammond on the need for a greater education of consumers about recycling opportunities, the need for standardisation of collection and quality standards between Local Authorities and the critical importance of cementing relationships with brand owners so that guidance on appropriate pack designs to facilitate recycling is actually used.”

Philip Law, Director of Public & Industrial Affairs at the BPF said, “The BPF Recycling Group is off to a flying start with a highly committed Chairman and Management Committee. It has already secured a high profile through its Buyers’ Guide which will be regularly updated to include new members and interest in the Group is extremely high.”

He added, “The BPF Recycling Group now has its own website which contains a wealth of information and resources which can help customers and other stakeholders. It contains full membership information and details of all Recycling Group positions on key issues such as materials quality and mixed plastics recycling.”
