BPF Responds to BBC Morning Live on Black Kitchen Utensils

BPF Responds to BBC Morning Live on Black Kitchen Utensils

During the BBC Morning Live show on Wednesday 15th January, the topic of black plastic and its chemicals used in kitchen utensils were covered. The segment was under 10 minutes long and featured Dr Andrew Turner from the University of Plymouth who spoke about flame retardants and lead used in plastics, which could be leaching into food and harming consumers. Whilst his views were somewhat balanced, The BPF issued a response, part of which was read out as part after the segment:

"The British Plastics Federation said that health and safety is paramount to the UK plastics industry and that Lead (Pb) pigments are only used in limited circumstances like bollard production while the use of Bromine (Br) in food utensils is heavily restricted or prohibited.

It says the industry is committed to tackling the recyclability of black plastics, which can now be separated from other waste using advanced infrared scanners."

Please find the link to the show here. Our response is read out at approximately 21mins.
