CSI: Litter Challenge Project for Schools
Litter is a major issue for our environment posing a threat to wildlife and impacting on the health of our ocean. It also affects the local community impacting on the look of our streets, parks and schools as well as being a financial burden.
The British Plastics Federation and PlasticsEurope have been working with Marine Conservation Soceity to address litter in schools.
In 2016 CSI: LItter challenge was launched. This project used problem-based learning to teach the students about litter through a hands on litter survey and a series of webinars to explore why litter occurs and the impacts it has. As part of this project schools were asked to develop a campaign that would help to reduce litter in their school or local area. The winning school was Hampton High School in London who used the idea of incentives to encourage students to change their behaviour. This idea has now been developed in Bincentives.
Bincentives using a series of posters displaying emoji messages to encourage the students to use litter bins and recycle. The students are rewarded for their behaviour with school-determined rewards.
