Employee Spotlight On Lara Steinhobel

In every organisation, there are individuals whose passion, knowledge, and commitment illuminate every task they undertake, making a significant impact on both their colleagues and the company as a whole. Today, we turn the spotlight on Lara Steinhobel, a shining star amidst our team, whose unwavering commitment and spirit has not only fueled her personal success, but also enriched the fabric of the BPF as a whole.

Lara joined the BPF in May 2022, after coming to London from South Africa! Originally studying Applied Biology in Cape Town, before her Master’s in Environmental Policy in the Netherlands, Lara began working in the Mining Industry. Following her time at an Engineering and Environmental Consulting firm in Johannesburg, (where she lived on a Manganese mine site for 4 months in the middle of the Kalahari Desert!), Lara made her move to London and began at the BPF.

She is now our Sustainability Issues Executive.

"My role includes looking after all things sustainability across the UK plastics supply chain – a true challenge and something I thrive on. My passion lies in helping businesses contribute to the circular economy through decarbonisation strategies, energy management, supply chain transformation as well as eco-design and waste management."

In one of her latest projects, Lara helped co-ordinate the BPF’s Net Zero Strategy for the plastics industry, shaping the way forward for the supply chain in terms of their scope emissions and practical next steps – which she’s incredibly excited to see pan out.

Lara is also representing the BPF on the current UN Global Treaty for Plastic Pollution together with BPF’s Sustainability Manager, Helen Jordan. They are both actively involved in country-level consultations, and in attending the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee meetings across the globe, aiming to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution.

When asked about Lara, her colleagues described her as ‘exactly what is driving the BPF forward today. She is reliable, passionate, and undeniably brilliant in everything she does’.

Outside of work, Lara loves running!

“Having completed over 60 official half marathons and 3 full marathons… the UK is proving to be a flat and oxygenated place to run so I’m loving it (even in the rain and cold…). If I’m not running in my spare time, I’m reading, cooking or watching sports.”

What Next For Lara?

Lara hopes to continue making a difference for businesses in terms of sustainability.

"I am passionate about research, communication and implementation in this this space, and hope to be able to cover all three aspects over my career."

As an indispensable asset, the BPF is incredibly grateful for her intellect, expertise, and consistant passion for sporting events!
