Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) has long been recognised for its technical performance in packaging and insulation in buildings, but it is increasingly earning a reputation in an unexpected place: the world of art.

From large-scale public sculptures to immersive exhibition pieces and theatrical props, EPS has become a go-to material for artists, designers and creative studios looking to push boundaries. Its lightweight structure, versatility and ease of sculpting make it ideal for transforming big ideas into striking visual experiences.

A Material Designed for Creativity

One of EPS’s greatest strengths is its adaptability. Artists can cut it, carve it, coat it, sand it and shape it into almost any form, and even use it to create moulds. Whether the goal is to create smooth organic curves or sharp geometric structures, EPS provides creators with extraordinary freedom.
Because it is exceptionally light, even the largest installations can be moved, transported and suspended with minimal infrastructure, unlocking creative potential that heavier traditional materials simply cannot support.

Supporting Large-Scale Art Without Heavy Impact

EPS enables projects that would otherwise be too heavy, too costly or too complex. Film and stage designers use it to build realistic environments. Museums rely on it for temporary displays that can be easily reconfigured. Public artists use it to produce bold, oversized pieces without the need for heavy machinery during installation.

This combination of scale, strength and simplicity is one reason EPS has become a staple in contemporary creative production.

A Sustainable Choice

EPS is 100% recyclable, and thousands of tonnes are recycled from the UK each year. Art studios that work with EPS blocks can support the circular economy by sending used EPS to recyclers located around the UK for recycling back into new products, including insulation boards and packaging. To find out where you can recycle EPS, check out the EPS Recyclers Map, which contains a comprehensive list of EPS recyclers near you with easy-to-navigate features to locate drop-off points and contact details.

Real-World Examples

Across the UK. Europe and beyond, EPS is used in:

  • Immersive brand experiences, where rapid prototyping and large-scale shapes are essential
  • Public sculptures, often several metres tall
  • Theatre and film props, including detailed architectural replicas
  • Museum exhibits, where lightweight materials improve safety and handling

Immersive Brand Experience

A recent immersive brand experience saw EPS take centre stage in the Banksy Limitless exhibition in the UK and worldwide. Grey EPS was transformed from a commonplace industrial material into a striking artistic medium, forming large-scale wall installations that depict the devastation of the conflicts in Palestine and Ukraine.

Its textured surface evokes damaged concrete and scarred urban landscapes, with the roughness intentionally accentuated for visual impact, transforming the lightweight material into a powerful backdrop for the artwork it supports. The muted grey tones reinforce the sense of destruction and displacement, allowing the material itself to become part of the visual narrative rather than simply a structural element.

Although visitors cannot touch the structure, its textured surfaces and monumental scale create a visually immersive environment, showcasing EPS’s versatility and its ability to make an impact far beyond traditional construction and packaging uses. The exhibition runs until the end of January at Sussex Mansions in South Kensington, and if you’re able to visit, keep an eye out for the striking use of EPS within the displays.

Public Sculptures

A recent example of public sculpture comes from CAD CAM Create’s work with 6am Studios on a bespoke piece for the high-profile collaboration between Nike and Nigerian-born artist Olaolu Slawn. Designed in Slawn’s distinctive style, the sculpture became the standout centrepiece of the new Nike Air trainers’ campaign, unveiled at an exclusive pop-up in London on 1 March. To realise the launch, CAD CAM Create transformed Slawn’s bold artistic concept into a full-scale EPS sculpture, expertly shaping the material to capture the energy and character of his work. The result elevated the event and showcased the precision, creativity and technical skill that define CAD CAM Create’s approach.

Theatre, Film Props and More…

EPS has become a material of choice in theatre, film production, advertising, music, and even theme parks, valued for its versatility, lightweight nature, and ease of shaping. Set designers and prop makers use EPS to create everything from detailed architectural structures to large-scale iconic features and installations that would be too heavy or costly to build from alternative materials. Its adaptability allows teams to carve, coat, and paint into realistic textures from stone and brick to metal and wood, while keeping structures safe, portable and quick to install. As productions demand ambitious visual environments, EPS continues to offer a practical, cost-effective solution that brings creative visions to life on stage and screen.
