HSE Priority Inspections - Legionella

We have been advised that HSE will target the Plastics Industry for compliance with The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems including cooling towers up until the end of October 2024.

BPF members should review the following in the event of an HSE visit:

  1. The Site Legionella Risk Assessment (SLRA), which should include open evaporative cooling systems , process water and hot & cold services.
  2. Ensure that ongoing monitoring of hot & cold water services is taking place to include monthly temperature checks on sentinel points
  3. Ensure that cooling towers have been registered with the local authority
  4. Ensure that ongoing monitoring of the cooling towers , to include weekly dip slides, quarterly legionella sampling and ongoing chemical analysis & dosing is complete.
  5. Annually (at a minimum) review of the SLRA with your Legionella Management & Water Treatment Specialist
  6. Only use Legionella Control Association ( LCA) registered Companies for Legionella Management & Water Treatment Specialists
  7. Ensure that all on site Legionella Control Logbooks are up to date.
  8. Ensure the Legionella Management structure including Duty Holder and Responsible Persons is present and up to date.
