Packaging Group Management Committee

The BPF Packaging Group has an active Group Management Committee Chaired by Ed Roberts, Global Advocay Leader at Sealed Air. The Committee meets three times annually. Drawing upon the BPF's ethos of 'Stronger Together', the Group is happy to welcome any BPF Packaging Group Member to the Committee.

The Committee is charged with raising the profile of plastics packaging and its benefits to society and the environment. Working in close co-operation with the BPF staff team it originates, develops and supervises the implementation of programmes to this effect which meet the needs and expectations of member firms. The programmes devised involve campaigns, one off events, political lobbying and individual initiatives. Where appropriate the activity programmes can involve or are shared with other BPF Membership Groups. From time-to-time sub-groups or working parties are formed to discuss specific issues facing the industry. This includes the technical group that meets three times a year alongside an issue specific working group.

In addition to informing consumers about the benefits of the plastics packaging they are using, the Group is passionate about informing Local Authorities and Government Agencies about the positive environmental impact plastics packaging has. An example of this is the Plastic Packaging FAQ's.

The Group recognises the vital role the media plays in how consumers perceive plastics packaging. Collating all of their expertise and using interesting case studies from Member companies, the Group have created a position statements page. Here journalists and other media bodies can access information on the Group's stance on issues such as marine litter, the safety of chemicals in plastics packaging and plastics packaging recycling.

The BPF are keen to get involved with UK national and devolved Government consultations. The Packaging Group have been active in consulting with government on the consultations following the Resources and Waste Strategy, and will continue to respond to forthcoming consultations. The Understanding The Debate About Plastics document details some of the issues facing the industry. Additionally, the BPF Vision sets out industry's commitment and plans of UK companies to meet recycling targets for plastic packaging waste and achieve wider economic environmental aims through a series of focused actions.

The BPF’s involvement with consultations that impact industry is not solely contained to UK Government as the Federation also respond to relevent consultations from the EU, including the Single Use Plastics Directive.

Group Information

Chairman: Alex Lee, Commercial Director at Cromwell Polythene Ltd

Yorkshire born and bred, Alex was educated at Bootham School in York before going on to study Rural Land Management at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester. After college, he spent seven formative years with Landmark Systems Ltd. where he cut his teeth in problem-solving and sales, helping farms, estates, and property owning entities across the UK implement crop management, property management, and accounting software.

In 2018, he joined the family business, Cromwell Polythene Ltd, working alongside his father, James and two brothers, Angus and Henry. Since being appointed Commercial Director, he has taken responsibility for procurement, sales, marketing, bids & contracts, and warehouse and logistics operations with a focus on product and strategic partnerships.

Deeply passionate about Britain’s natural environment, he is a strong advocate for the role of flexible films in protecting goods, improving operational efficiency, and enabling responsible waste management—championing plastics as a force for good in both local and global contexts.

Actively involved with CIWM, LARAC, HWMA, and CHSA, he works closely with public and private sector clients, promoting the responsible use of plastics across sectors including healthcare, hygiene, industrial, janitorial and waste management.

Moving from agriculture, to software, and eventually plastics. Alex’s strengths lie in embracing new challenges, fostering collaboration to achieve shared goals, and building engagement through empowerment of others.

Outside of work, he enjoys fly fishing Britain’s great rivers—especially the River Ure—and exploring the countryside with his wife Charlie, daughter Dorothy, and their dog, Mr. Boots.

Deputy Chairman: Bruce Margetts, Managing Director at Bericap UK

“The BPF Packaging Group is an essential and highly valuable forum to allow our industry to find and express common ground on the plethora of challenges we face. Over many years involvement, it is clear that there is a very strong commitment to environmental responsibility and desire to find solutions which align with the public desires and government policies but using our expertise to avoid the pit-falls of unintended consequences. Plastic played a big role in saving elephants from extinction – in our shared desire to save the whales from the effects of pollution we don’t want to sacrifice the polar bears through compromising on the beneficial carbon impact of most packaging.”
