What is PackScore?

PackScore is a simplified, easy-to-use eco-design tool. Answer a series of questions on your packaging design, and receive a recyclability rating from A - F. In addition, questions relate to other sustainability criteria, such as light-weighting and re-use.

(The A - F rating is an indicative guide only, a more comprehensive tool such as Recyclass or PREP should be used to determine recyclability)

How Should It Be Used?

This tool is specifically designed to be used at the early stage of packaging design, during discussions among stakeholders who may not have all the technical information needed for more comprehensive tools. It can act as a guide and educational tool to illustrate how some design choices may sometimes influence environmental outcomes.

Who is it for?

Packaging designers, brands, retailers, manufacturers, packer-fillers. The tool is particularly useful for those who do not have a strong background in the technical side of packaging.

What is the tool NOT supposed to be?

This tool is not intended to be used as a determination of whether a product can be recycled, or to categorically state if a product is or is not sustainable. The tool is a purposefully simplified guide to indicate how different product features typically (in most common cases) influence how easy a product is to recycle, or help improve the packaging's overall sustainability. However, in real life there are exceptions and so more technical guides are strongly recommended if a definitive determination is required.
